Best Day Walks in Sydney
With the covid-19 restrictions now slowly being relaxed, I have been spending my weekends outdoors and have been lapping up the fresh air. I spent this past weekend 4wding, and the weekend before that camping in the Blue Mountains! This week, I thought I would pull together a list of my favourite day walks in and around Sydney. It’s a list that I’ve built up over the years and a list that I often pull out when I have visitors in town, or just feel like an adventure.
1. The Coast Track
The Coast Track is a 26km stretch of track that runs from Bundeena to Otford and makes for a jam-packed day of walking. For those of you who are more keen to take your time and enjoy the spectacular coastal views this walk has to offer, there is the option to spend the night at North Era campground and to split the walk over 2 days.
2. The Great North Walk
Choosing a section (or two) of the Great North Walk to tackle makes a fantastic day walk from Sydney. It’s an iconic walk that runs from Sydney to Newcastle and, if done in one block, takes roughly two weeks to complete. Luckily, there are a bunch of different sections to choose from that vary in style and difficulty, meaning you have ample opportunity to choose a day walk best suited to you.
3. Sphinx Memorial to Bobbin Head Loop Track
The Sphinx Memorial to Bobbin Head Track is a 10km loop that takes you through the gorgeous scenery of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park near North Turramurra. It takes you along some pretty trails and steep hills, all the while making you feel like you are miles away from the bustling hub that is Sydney. The best part? It’s not an up and back, so there is zero chance you’ll get bored!
4. Wentworth Falls
For a walk that is a little further away from Sydney, any of the Wentworth Falls tracks are well worth exploring. There are many walks that run in the Wentworth Falls area, so I am attaching a link to an article that highlights some of the most popular. The falls themselves are a sight to behold, and are absolutely breathtaking, especially when there is lots of water rushing down from the top. Don’t forget to stop into Leura on the way home – it’s my favourite little Blue Mountains town!
5. Henry Head Circuit
Henry Head Circuit is an old favourite of mine – its location not too far from where I grew up means that I have walked it many times. The track is just shy of 7kms and takes about 2 hours to complete. The path follows beaches and cliff tops, and you get to visit WWI and WWII post stations along the way. It’s easy to get to with plenty of parking, and for those of you who fancy a nudie rudie dip in the ocean, you can finish up with a refreshing dip at Little Congwong.
6. Bondi to Manly
Recently opened, the Bondi to Manly walk links the 2 most iconic beaches of Sydney with 80kms of stunning walking track. Although it’s a walk I’m yet to tackle, it’s definitely one that’s on my bucket list! Have any of you tried it yet? If so, let me know your favourite sections. There is absolutely no way that I’ll be completing this in one day, but I would love to slowly tick off the entire walk. How lucky we are to live here!
