Nup The Cup: Event Review

On Tuesday I boycotted the Melbourne Cup, instead attending a #NUPTHECUP event hosted by Bodhi Restaurant in Sydney. It was such a special day so I wanted to whip up a review and share more about how the event went down.

As you know, horseracing is something I stand very strongly against. If you want to know more about this, please check out my article on Why I’m Taking a Stance Against HorseracingIt is an industry that exploits animals purely for financial gain. Far too many horses are being injured and killed due to brutal conditions, and also simply because we are breeding too many horses, hoping to produce the next Makybe Diva.

So, what was the #NUPTHECUP event all about?
The event was a way of bringing together likeminded, compassionate people to increase awareness of the dark side of horseracing, and raise funds for Horse Rescue Australia, an incredible organisation that rehabilitates horses who have suffered abuse, neglect or abandonment.

Bodhi Restaurant did a phenomenal job of hosting us – the menu was delectable, and we left feeling completely satisfied, if a little full! If you haven’t been to Bodhi, you should put it HIGH up on your to do list. Their yum cha is mouth-watering and 100% vegan! I also loved that the venue was decorated with a bunch of pop-up stalls - all plant-based and cruelty-free of course. It was such a great way to promote and support vegan brands, and to help educate attendees about how to lead a more conscious life.

We were also lucky enough to hear Joy Galbally, Secretary of Horse Rescue Australia, give a passionate and thought-provoking speech about the work they do. She told us stories of horses who had come to them with clear signs of abuse, and how they worked hard to rehabilitate and rehome them where appropriate. If you would like to check out the organisation or learn more about what they do, Horse Rescue Australia holds volunteer days every six weeks, where they open up their facilities to the public and show people the importance of their work. I am looking forward to visiting – education is a huge and important step in fighting this battle. Their next volunteer day is on December 8th, so if you’re in town, head out and show your support.

To the team at Bodhi and all involved in putting on such a spectacular day - thank you for having my family, friends and I and for providing a safe space for us to celebrate and share the vegan vibes. We are always stronger together, and it fills my heart to connect with so many inspiring humans.
