6 Eco-Friendly Bedding Brands for a Good Night’s Sleep

If you were under the impression that the environmental impacts of your day began when you reached for your bamboo toothbrush, it’s time to think again. In fact, it actually started an hour earlier when you were snug-as-a-bug in your bedsheets.

Over time, the bedding industry has been given a dirty name. It seems that most of the world’s cotton is produced in an industry that is rife with poor conditions and harmful practices, both of which have disastrous consequences all the way from farmer to consumer. Some of the issues faced are unhealthy labour conditions, poor wages, high levels of toxin usage and water intensive practices. Thankfully, there are a bunch of great brands who are bursting onto the bedding scene and working to bring integrity and ethics into a traditionally unsustainable industry. Here are 6 eco-friendly bedding brands I am loving!

Ettitude
Based in Melbourne, Ettitude creates bedding from 100% organic bamboo lyocell. They crush the bamboo then dissolve it into a fine fiber using a non-toxic system, saving 98% of the water. This is then spun into yarn and woven into a soft fabric. Yes, I know there are conflicting views about using bamboo as a fabric (check out this post), but there are many undisputed benefits – it is incredibly soft, naturally hypoallergenic and swiftly wicks away moisture. Something else I love about Ettitude is that they use a closed-loop production process that reuses water and resources to drastically minimise waste. Top it off with the fact that Ettitude doesn’t use any insecticides and their products are 100% vegan, and it’s an easy yes from me! Oh, and did I mention they offer free shipping across Australia?

Bhumi Organics
Australian brand Bhumi Organics creates organic certified bedsheets in neutral colours. Their products are sustainable, ethical and free of toxins – not to mention utterly luxurious.  This brand saw the detrimental effects that producing conventional cotton was having on farmers and the land, and instead set out on a journey to create a market for a better solution. The solution they found was organic cotton, which requires far less water to produce than conventional cotton, and isn’t treated with any pesticides, insecticides or herbicides that harm entire eco-systems.

SOL Organics
SOL Organics is an American brand that is passionate about helping consumers lead a sustainable lifestyle. Their contribution? Certified organic sheets that are fair trade and non-GMO. After years of research, they came up with a proposition for non-GMO seeds that offer farmers a way out of debt and away from harsh working conditions. They also donate $7.50 to one of four charities you choose with every set you purchase. The 4 charities are Children’s Defense Fund, Hope for Justice, Water4 and the Fund for Animals. You can read more about their charity program here.  With sheets that are soft, smooth and sustainable, SOL Organics checks all my boxes!

Bed Threads
Think luxury. Think linen. Think lazy days and summer night slumbers. Another Aussie label making tracks in the eco-bedding industry is Bed Threads. This brand was created when founder Genevieve Rosen-Biller realised that purchasing a new set of linen bedding was awfully pricey. Instead, she came up with a way to market 100% flax linen for about $250 by turning the traditional sales model on its head. Why do we love linen? It keeps you nice and cool over summer whilst also functioning as an insulator when the weather cools down. Another plus is that it comes from flax, which needs far less water and pesticides to cultivate when compared to conventional cotton. It also arrives on your doorstep in plastic-free packaging!

Elkie & Ark
I couldn’t write an article on sustainable bedding without including Australia’s first B-corp certified  bedding brand, Elkie & Ark. When I speak about passionate brands, this one is at the front of my mind. Every single part of production is carefully thought out to be as ethical as possible, from the way materials are grown and collected, all the way to the packaging you receive. They use recycled and upcycled fabrics, minimise their waste and water, and have eliminated the use of toxic chemicals. Elkie & Ark are also dedicated to supporting those in need. Every single sale supports literacy programs, scholarships for kids, anti-trafficking and more – you can read about their incredible social and environmental impact programs here

Good Studios
The last brand on my list is Good Studios. This brand differs from the others mentioned above as they create their bedding from hemp-based linen. The pros? Hemp is super durable, which means this is an investment that will last some time. It also boasts antibacterial properties which means you won’t have to wash your bedding as regularly, saving precious water and energy. I also love the colour palette that Good Studios has created – their sheets come in gorgeous natural hues like indigo, oatmeal, terracotta and khaki. Need I say more?

Needless to say, the only thing better than sliding into soft and luxurious sheets each night is knowing that those very same sheets are created with a conscience. And thanks to these incredible brands that are working hard to create sustainable and ethically-made bedding, it’s now something that every single one of us can feel.
