5 Products for a Sustainable Home

I have been making a more intentional effort over the last few weeks to think of ways I can improve the sustainability of my home. Achieving a low-tox, low-waste household is something I’ve been working on over the last few years, and I wanted to use the extra time we are currently gifted to make take some additional steps towards that goal. I’ve chosen 5 products that I think are game changers in creating a sustainable home. I made sure that they covered a range of issues - energy consumption, plastic waste and chemical exposure. Of course, these are just 5 products that you can use to make your home more sustainable. If you want some more information on creating an eco-friendly household, please check out my article on getting started

1. Stasher Bags
I got some of these for Christmas and loved them so much that I put in an order for my birthday as well! Stasher bagsare silicone food storage bags, and are the BEST alternative to Ziplocs. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why I think they are the bees knees - the seal is incredibly strong, they come in all different sizes, they’re perfect for travel, and are freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe (just to name a few). Stasher bags definitely deserve a spot in your kitchen!

2. Solar Panels
2020 is a great time to buy a solar system for your home because the NSW Government is aiming to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. This means that they are offering various schemes which give you the opportunity to save on your solar. You can check out what is available here. If you’re looking for a double whammy on the electricity front, why not swap your energy provide over to Enova Energy as well?

3. Avocado Holders
We all know that once avocados have been sliced open, they need to be wrapped up to stay fresh. We also know that’s pretty hard to do without using glad wrap, my pet peeve in the kitchen. Let me introduce you to the Avocado holder! These nifty little devices help prevent oxidising and keep your avocados safe from bumps in storage. I love items like these that wipe out our need for single use plastics.

4. Thieves Household Cleaner
Did you know that the average home contains 62 toxic chemicals which are known to cause a whole range of horrific health issues? It is imperative that you do what you can to go chemical-free. Thieves Household Cleaner is an all-purpose cleaner made with 100% plant and mineral-based ingredients. Its concentrated formula makes it one of the most versatile home cleaning products – for use in every room. If you want more information on creating a toxic-free home, check out my guide to chemical-free cleaning here.

5. Produce Bags
Now I’m not talking about reusable, canvas shopping bags – I think most of us have gotten our heads around those. What I’m talking about are smaller, drawstring produce bags. You know when you’re at the shops and you’re doing so well because you brought your shopping bag, but then you realise you need plastic bags to put your beans, tomatoes and apples in? That’s where these handy little things come into play. There’s no reason to let the build-up of plastic bags be your downfall – not when you have access to these bags that are inexpensive and can be reused, time and time again.
