Summer is fast approaching here in Sydney, and us Australians tend to be very outdoorsy people, where slapping on the sunscreen is a part of our everyday life. Firstly let me ask you this, have you guys ever looked at the ingredients on the back of a sunscreen bottle and felt absolutely clueless? I know I have. A lot of sunscreens that we buy from our supermarket shelves include a lot of chemicals and it has been proven that the toxicity of chemical based sunscreens are harmful to marine life, oceans and reefs in particular.

In 2015 it was estimated that around 14,000 tons of sunscreen, yes you read that right 14,000 tons was ending up in the worlds coral reefs and causing damage. This means that when we go for a dip in the ocean, we are now not just swimming in seawater like we all think, but also swimming in the chemicals from the personal care products that have made their way into the oceans. I was shocked to learn that 60 million bottles of sunscreen wash off into the coral reefs each year and 25% of sunscreen that we apply ends up in the water within 20 minutes of application.

This year Hawaii was the first in history to ban the sale of sunscreen that contained the two chemical UV-filters; Oxybenzone and Octinoxate; this being after scientific studies revealed the deadly impacts these have on our corals. Oxybenzone is used in 70% of cosmetic products on the market as a UV filter, so we can now see why so much of these chemicals are found in our oceans. Hawaii banning the chemicals is not only helping to reduce the damage to our oceans and reefs but they’re also doing a favour to its people. If they’re detrimental to the coral reefs, you can only imagine how bad they are for your skin and your health once they enter your bloodstream after application.

After learning the above and wanting to continuing making changes to my lifestyle that would impact our world, I was on the search for a healthy mineral sunscreen. This is when I found People 4 Ocean sunscreen and aftersun and I adore them. Since becoming Vegan and trying to make these small changes in my lifestyle, there are definitely certain everyday products that are harder to find than others. Since trying P4O’s products for the first time a few months ago, I haven’t looked back. I am all about supporting awesome local business’ from here in Australia, especially when I love what they’re about. Not only do their products have the benefit of helping to reduce coral reef degradation but they last all day. Their products provide you with effective sun protection that helps to address the damages that the sun exposure can have on our skin from ageing, pigmentation and dehydration, whilst also being free of chemicals that other brands may contain. We (if you live in australia) live in a country where skin cancer and coral bleaching are currently at a record high and this will most likely continue to grow unless we make the changes like People 4 Oceans are trying to solve.

People 4 Oceans are a natural sun and skin system loved by many, from marine scientists, eco - activists, luxury skincare users and owners of resorts and spa’s around Australia. They’re doing their upmost to help save Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and raise awareness about the damage we’re doing to the reef everyday and provide the citizens with a natural sunscreen that is not only good for the ocean but also for their health.
