10 Vegan Supermarket Alternatives I’m LOVING

Over the last year our mainstream supermarkets have really stepped up their game. You can now buy virtually anything in plant-based form. It’s gone from a scenario where you would walk into the shops and settle for that one Macro burger patty on the shelves, to one where you have a whole entire section to choose from! I’ve pulled together a list of my favourite products that have hit the shelves in our supermarkets over the last few months. Here are my top 10!

1. Tofurkey
This faux meat brand is the bomb.com. My favourite product is the chick’n – it shreds apart delightfully in your fingers and is a perfect addition to salads and wraps. But in all fairness, their sausages do give the chick’n a run for its money!

2. Sheese Mozzarella
Having a cheese like this in our major supermarkets is a massive breakthrough for me. Whilst there are a number of epic vegan cheeses on the market, most of them are harder to source. If I’m being honest, I don’t love the BioCheese that Coles and Woolies normally stock, so to have this new mozzarella on the shelves is awesome!

3. Nakula Yogurt
This passionfruit yogurt is TO DIE FOR. Us vegans know that coconut yogurt is a staple in the plant-based diet – but sometimes I find it a little tiresome. This is where Nakula has blown their predecessors out of the water. They have done a fantastic job of creating a rich and creamy yogurt. Yum yum!

4. Plant-Based Meat Burgers
There are a whole bunch of these now being stocked in the supermarkets – Next Gen2The Vegan FactorHarvest Gourmet, and Moving Mountains. I’m still making my way through them, but if you have a favourite I’d love to know which one it is!

5. Veganaise – Plant-Based Mayo
Okay, so this one isn’t a new addition, but it’s definitely worth a mention! Some sandwiches just need mayo on top and this one is pretty damn good!

6. Icecream
I don’t know if you have noticed, but the supermarkets are now bursting full with incredible vegan icecreams. My favourite are the vegan magnums, but there are also Ben & Jerrys tubs, Drumsticks, Proud & Punch icypoles and Pana Organic icecreams, not to mention that Woolworths now do their own plant-based chocolate and vanilla tubs. Talk about vegan heaven!

7. Kehoe’s Sauerkraut
Let’s change direction here and go down the healthy route for a second. Kehoe’s Sauerkraut comes in beautiful, reusable glass jars that are packed with health benefits – they’re full of probiotics that optimise your gut health and boost your digestion.

8. Cream Cheese
There are 2 brands that are blowing my mind in this department – Made with Plants and Miyokos.  Cream cheese is such a versatile food – I use it in dips, dressings and desserts. These brands have a creamy, thick texture, and are just perfect for spreading on a morning bagel.

9. Plant-based duck
Plant Asia have released a new product into our supermarkets – vegan roast duck! Mmm, did someone say duck pancakes? No longer do us vegans have to go without. Vegan duck, hoisin sauce and cucumber on pancakes makes for a scrumptious meal.

10. Fruit & Veg
Don’t roll your eyes – it’s all about balance! And whilst fresh produce is definitely not a new addition to the supermarkets, it’s my favourite and most well-loved one on this list. I am forever grateful to the ever-growing list of vegan alternatives, and I love that when I feel like a cheesy burger with mayo, all I need to do is pop to the supermarket. But to be honest, fruit and veg form the staple of my diet, and if there’s one section I will forever frequent at the store, it’s this one.

We are so lucky to live somewhere that has such incredible access to vegan food. It lights up my heart to see how quickly this movement is gaining traction, and how many more options we now have in mainstream supermarkets. Look out – vegans are taking over the world!
