9 Of The Best Weekend Trips To Take Around Sydney

Blue mountains

No matter how many times you go to the Blue Mountains, there is always something to do. I personally love to do a self guided tour rather than a group tour and it is totally doable. Let’s face it, some tours can be pretty expensive. Whether you want to do this as a day trip or a weekend getaway, you’ll find yourself surrounded by beautiful nature with some breathtaking scenery, waterfalls and hikes. Personally I love going here in the winter, its a little chilly at times but its a lot less busy and when hiking, i’d rather be a little colder than melting in the Sydney summer heat. Things to do:

  • Go on the Scenic Cableway

  • Check out the views from the Scenic Skyway, with 360 degree views of Katoomba Falls, The Three Sisters and Jamison Valley.

  • Have a cocktail in the Sublime lounge, where you can warm up in front of the wood fire.

  • Do the Wentworth Falls lookout track.

  • Head into the quaint village of Leura

  • If this is your kinda thing, go cave diving in the Jenolan Caves (You get guides who take you out to do it, don’t worry you don’t go doing it alone)

Jervis Bay

This is home to some of the most idyllic beaches around and a must see if you’re visiting Sydney. With the most beautiful white sandy beaches, breathtaking views and even some dolphin and whale watching tours, there’s something for everyone. Things to do:

  • Head to Hyams Beach

  • Check out Murrays Beach

  • Do the White Sands Walk

  • Whale and Dolphin watching tours

  • Walks around Booderee National Park and check out Kitty Beach and Cave Beach

Avoca Beach

A perfect place to relax and have a chilled weekend by the beach without the crowds you find at most Sydney beaches. The benefit is that it is only an hour outside of Sydney and as well as having the luxury of the beach at your doorstep, you have some amazing brunch spots and beautiful sunsets.

Newcastle

Filled with delicious food spots, hipster bars and some picture perfect beaches that are perfect for those who surf. Things to do:

Bowral

A Country town in the Southern Highlands. This is a perfect winter getaway, with hotels filled with spas and wood fires. Cosy up around the fires whilst sipping on cocktails and enjoying some heart warming food.

Palm Beach

Yes you can just do this in a day, but doing a weekend getaway here, means you can really relax and enjoy what it has to offer. Whilst only being an hours drive from the CBD, you definitely feel like you have left the craziness of Sydney behind and are instantly in vacation mode.  From beautiful golden sand, glittering blue waters, good surf to a picturesque walk up to the lighthouse all on your doorstep. Things to do:

  • Take a walk up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse

  • Enjoy a picnic under the pine trees

  • Have a wine and some food at the Boathouse

  • Have a drink or some food at the famous Jonah’s whilst enjoying spectacular views

  • If you’re a home and away fan, take a walk around and see the sights from the show or join the Flamin’ Galahs Sydney Tours to relive your favourite scenes from home and away.

Kims Beachfront Retreat

Luxurious and deluxe bungalows and spa villas nestled in the subtropical rainforest with the ocean on your doorstep. Enjoy your own little spa/jacuzzi, soak up the sun around the pool or on Toowoon bay and enjoy the overflowing buffet that is on offer 3 times a day. Get yourself to the Hunter Valley to explore not only the great selection of the finest vineyards, but also the Brewery and wildlife park too to get up close with the beautiful koala’s and kangaroos. If you’re travelling with friends and want to do all this on a bit of a budget, you can do all this as part of a tour, check out Kangarrific Tours. Or if you’re looking for a more luxurious weekend getaway id definitely recommend staying at the Long House. I have stayed here twice now and I absolutely love it. You wouldn’t even need to check out the wildlife park as you usually get wild kangaroos hoping around the property. Things to do:

  • If a few of you love a Beer in your group, check out Potters Brewery

  • There are multiple lunch options at the Roche Estate where you can stop on your route.

  • Other Vineyards to check out other than the one at Long House - Blueberry Hills, Mount View Estate and see more detailed list here.

Orange

A beautiful country town with all the food and away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney. Id recommend booking a cute little place on Airbnb or if you’re looking for a truely magical experience for a relaxing getaway, check out Dragonfly Cottages. Orange offers some perfect country hikes, amazing wines at the local winery’s and delicious food whether it be for brunch or dinner. Things to do:
